Description: Trail-related resources along the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail include sites, structures, landscapes, and objects that support the trail’s purposes to protect resources, provide interpretive opportunities, and foster recreation and heritage tourism. Trail-related resources include sites where major decisions or events with definitive consequences occurred; that reflect the daily lives, activities and choices made by civilians during wartime; and that supported commercial activity, strategic operations and fortifications. Such places provide opportunities for interpretation that connects visitors in meaningful ways with past events. Objects and artifacts accessible to the public, post-war monuments and memorials, and archaeological sites also present opportunities for resource protection and interpretation, as do landscapes that evoke an early 19th century setting.Trail-related resources were identified from existing inventories and scholarly publications. War of 1812 resource inventories and publications include those prepared for various planning and commemorative activities ( Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail Feasibility Study, 2004; Report to Congress on the Preservation of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Sites in the United States, 2007; Maryland List of 1812 Sites, 2003; Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission Resource Inventory, 2010; Virginia War of 1812 Society’s Encounters with the British during the War of 1812, 2010), and scholarly publications (including Eshelman, et. al. 2010; George, 2001) contributed to the identification and definition of a set of resources that specifically support the existence of the trail.
